Community Playgroup
Children from the Practical Karate and Freestyle Kick Boxing Centre took part in a fund raising event which raised £103 for the St. Asaph Community Playgroup.
Places at the Community Playgroup at the V.P. School are available for September for children aged 2yrs 3 months. All are welcome from 9am until 11.15 or 1pm. For more information contact the Playgroup Manager, Tracey Screen on 07510 432114 .
The staff and parents of children at the nursery would like to send best wishes to Ms. Susan Williams who has retired as Headmistress of the V.P. School. We would all like to thank her for all her support over the years and wish her every success for the future.
A big thank you also to Julie and Simon Morrell from Practical Karate & Freestyle Kick Boxing Centre for organising the fundraising event with the V.P. School children who attend their classes.
Beware Fungus Spores
Beware garden fungus spores is the warning being issued after a 47 year old man died just days after opening a bag of rotting plant material and accidentally inhaling dust which contained spores from the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus commonly found growing on dead leaves, stored grain, compost piles or decaying vegetation. The man was admitted to hospital with a fever, shortness of breath and chest pains. The NHS website points out that healthy hobbyist gardeners should not be panicked by this story. Aspergillosis infection is rare and unlikely at the levels of compost exposure experienced by most people. Gardeners who are likely to be exposed to large quantities of composted material should consider wearing a mask.

Watch Where You Put That Bin!
A build up of heat in a compost bin caused a fire which damaged a garage, shed and greenhouse before being brought under control by the fire brigade, as a result of which the following advice is issued to gardeners.
Grass cuttings should not be kept for long periods of time in tied or knotted bags which prevent heat loss and can allow self heating.
Bags of garden refuse should not be stored in sheds, garages or enclosed spaces and should be kept away from fences, hedges or other flammable objects.
Compost heaps should be turned regularly to stop heat building up in the centre and ensure that a good mix of waste vegetable matter and cardboard etc is put into the composter rather than solely garden waste. |
