Ysgol Glan Clwyd News

Ysgol Glan Clwyd achieved astounding success at the recent Urdd National Eisteddfod at Penrhyn Bay where they gained eight first prizes and seven second prizes. Steffan Hughes gained a personal triumph by being involved in six of the eight first prize performances.

First Prize winners were:- Boys Solo, Steffan Hughes; Duet, Steffan Hughes and Angharad Rowlands; Recitation, Steffan Hughes; Cerdd Dant Solo, Steffan Hughes; Cerdd Dant Duet, Steffan Hughes and Angharad Rowlands; Folk Song, Jade Davies; Vocal Ensemble, Steffan Hughes, Angharad Rowlands and Bethany Jukes-Hughes; Cerdd Dant Choir, Ysgol Glan Clwyd.
Second Prize winners were:- Folk Song, Steffan Hughes; Boys Party, Ysgol Glan Clwyd; Cerdd Dant Party, Ysgol Glan Clwyd; Action Song, Ysgol Glan Clwyd. In the Years 13 and younger choir competitions, Ysgol Glan Clwyd took second place in the Boys Choir, Girls Choir and Folk Choir.

The school were also successful in a number of competitions in the Homework Section as follows:- First prizes: Calligraphy, Matthew Jenkins; Design Technology, Ellen Deir; CAD/CAM, Steffan Hughes; Composing for instruments, Aled Clark and Composing for Cerdd Dant under 25, Rhian Rees Owen.
Second Prize winners:- Create an Artefact, Ellen Gratton; Composing Cerdd Dant, Siwan Rees Roberts; 2D Photographs, Gwen Evans; Computer Photography and Graphics, Matthew Jenkins.
Third Prize winners: Computer Photography and Graphics, Hannah Carrington; Black & White Print (Photo) Matthew Jenkins; Create an Artefact, Manon Roberts.
The final total of prizes was First - 13; Second - 11; Third -3. Steffan Hughes, Year 9, won The Most Promising Young Person (between 14 -19) in the Performing Arts Scholarship. The Scholarship is worth £500 for Steffan to gain further tuition in the performing arts. He was also presented with the Owain Glyndwr Trophy which he keeps for a year. It is obvious that Steffan has a bright future in front of him in the performing world.
Congratulations also to Bethan Davies, a former pupils at Ysgol Glan Clwyd, who is now a student at the Yale Art and Design College, Wrexham. Bethan won The Art & Design Scholarship at the Eisteddfod. This was the third consecutive year that a pupil with a connection to Ysgol Glan Clwyd has won this prestigious scholarship.
